PLS vs canonical correlation and relation to the O2PLS method
Written by Johan Trygg

I have compiled a few obvious differences between PLS2 and canonical correlation below . In addition, I also describe their relation to a recent development of the OPLS method called O2PLS.

Chemometrics in Metabonomics and Metabolomics
Written by Johan Trygg, Umeå University & Torbjörn Lundstedt, AcurePharma

In the post-genomics era, the use of methodologies that enable transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic data to be analysed in detail have revolutionized biological investigations. One of the major advantages with metabolomics investigations compared to traditional target metabolite analysis is that metabolomics data can give an unbiased view of changes in metabolism during environmental, genetic or developmental changes. Instead of tracking only a few metabolites, changes in relative amounts in 300 to 1000 or even more metabolites can be recorded and analysed, covering all major metabolic pathways.

This development has accentuated the need to apply and further develop chemometric methodology.

Can we use the regression coefficient profile for selecting PLS components?
Written by Johan Trygg
The linear model y=Xb + f is often used in chemometrics. Unfortunately, we have put too much emphasis on the importance of the regression coefficient profile b, and mistakenly assumed or believed that it should be a good estimate of the "pure profile". This is not true, and I will argue why in later editorials. But this time, I want to address an earlier question that was posed in relation to the regression coefficient profile.

Svante Wold's New Year Editorial 2004
The year 2003 has passed amazingly fast - I feel it was yesterday that I was struggling with last years New Year editorial. But actually the world has moved one year forward, and we now write January 2004. Chemometrics has had another good year with exciting and enjoyable conferences at, among others, Åland and Lisbon, displaying improved methodology, and interesting applications.

Added ICS discussion forum

Dear All,

I have added the International Chemometrics Society list server discussion forum to Chemometrics.se. You will find it on the left menu, or click here (http://www.chemometrics.se/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=42).

best regards,

Classification with Support Vector Machines
Classification is very common task in chemometrics and several methods are reported in the literature for solving this type of problems. The choice of the most appropriate method depends on the specific nature of the problem.
